Video Poker is a popular game that usually will be wagered on in casinos across the world, or in your house on your PC, through an Internet connection. The regulations are very straightforward and consist of the player attempting to get the highest combination of cards as you can in order to come away with money. In this respect it is much the same as a regular game of poker, minus the line of contact with other players. Of course, tactics used in a real-life game of poker, like tricking, will be useless here.

The game of Video Poker starts when the player puts credits (either tokens, tickets or cash) into the machine and pushes the draw button. A hand of 5 cards will then be electronically ‘dealt’ on the screen.

For the cards the gambler wishes to keep, the ‘hold’ buttons should be pressed so that they illuminate. The player can choose to keep any amount of cards they want, whether it’s all or none.

After the gambler has decided on which cards she would like to retain, they should press ‘deal’, which will mean that any new cards will be handed out if desired. The round is now completed, with the Electronic Poker machine scanning the cards to see if it is the same as any of the winning hands shown on the payment schedule.

Typically, the lowest winning hand on a Video Poker machine is a pair of jacks with the prize money growing for each and every better hand. A list of common winning hands starts with jacks or better, and moves on to 2 pairs, 3 of a kinds, straights, flushes, full houses, four of a kinds, straight flushes and finally royal flushes. It is obvious that the payout schedule can vary from game to game, so that skillful enthusiasts are agile enough to select the most beneficial game each time.

Once the initial round has finished, the player can either choose to remain on in an attempt to increase their winnings, or press the ‘collect’ button to retrieve any cash that might have been won. Additionally, several styles of the game give the enthusiast a chance to increase their wins, in which case a further round is played. There are also variations between specific games, with some virtual decks having wild cards and other varying characteristics to enhance playability.
